It was simply made to work, made to last, and made honestly from solid wood. This example does all of those things: solid saddle seat in honey-toned maple or birch, vertical slat back with curved crest rail, four sturdy legs with front and rear stretchers. The construction is straightforward and well-executed throughout. The wood is warm and even in tone, the grain visible and characterful in the seat. No maker’s label is present — consistent with the many regional American manufacturers who produced this form through the mid-20th century. Works at a desk, dining table, kitchen island, or library table in virtually any interior style. A timeless and endlessly useful chair.
