Seller's Notes: Beautiful “Vitruvian Man” lacquer wall hanging by Leonardo Da Vinci. The condition is excellent. The dimensions are 29” W x 38” H x 2” D. This was purchased from a leather furniture store on Central Park Avenue, Scarsdale, NY. It was originally purchased for around $250. My dad, a physician, purchased this for his home office. This would make an excellent gift for a physician, or for the Renaissance Man in your life! The “Vitruvian Man” is a drawing by the Italian Renaissance artist and scientist Leonardo da Vinci, dated c. 1490. Leonardo da Vinci’s “Vitruvian Man” is based on the correlations of ideal human proportions with geometry described by the ancient Roman architect Vitruvius in Book III of his treatise De architectura. It is often referred to as the world's most famous drawing and among the all-time iconic images of Western civilization. The work is a unique synthesis of artistic and scientific ideals and often considered an archetypal representation of the High Renaissance. The drawing depicts a nude man in two superimposed positions with his arms and legs apart and inscribed in both a circle and square. The drawing represents Leonardo's conception of ideal body proportions, originally derived from Vitruvius but influenced by his own measurements and the drawings of his contemporaries. The drawing was executed primarily with pen and light-brown ink, while there are traces of brown wash (watercolor). The “Vitruvian Man” is often considered an representative of the High Renaissance, just as Leonardo himself came to represent the archetypal 'Renaissance man'. It holds a unique distinction in aligning art, mathematics, science, classicism, and naturalism. Da Vinci believed the workings of the human body to be an analogy, in microcosm, for the workings of the universe. The original is hung in Gallerie dell'Accademia, Venice.
