Seller's Notes:I am not an expert but according to my husband, these are 1800's pair of French Sconces. He bought them about 55 years ago. They are museum quality. The curled effects, the vines, the acanthus leaves ("The acanthus is a vegetal motif rich in symbolism and has long been associated with the notion of rebirth. It is a symbol of immortality and resurrection, and as a decorative motif it has been used as early as 500 BCE in Grecian art.") the detail of this woman's face and her adornment causes me to agree with him. Plus, I did extensive research to match the attributes of these sconces with others with similar descriptions. I credit them to be a European work of art. Even the candle holders have raised art that appear to match the art nouveau design that the French incorporated in their brass work. What is unique about these sconces are the '5' curved, scrolled and adorned arms that hold a candle. Most sconces have two, very infrequently perhaps three, but 5 is extraordinary. The last photo I posted has an arrow pointing to one arm. This arm is bent up just a little out of position. The buyer of these magnificent Gilt Bronze sconces will have to find an ironsmith to bend it ever so slightly back into it's rightful curve. It shouldn't be an issue. Also, there is some oxidation in a couple of places that leaves a greenish residue. It is minimal and a good cleaning will rid you of this tarnish. Mostly, these sconces are a magnificent works of art. And, to top it off, they are signed. There are two initials on the back. They look to be a Z and an R. I haven't been able to find the names in any registry yet.
