Herman Miller Eames Coffee Table
Product details
Seller's Notes:Rare vintage 1960s MCM Charles Eames for Herman Miller circular coffee table. Features white laminate table top with black rubber trim supported by a black stem and aluminum four-point contract base.
Original seal is on the underside of the table top. My grandparents bought it as part of a set of 2 tables directly from Herman Miller in the 1960s and are the only previous owners. The taller small dining table in the second image is no longer available.
Dimensions: 42 inch diameter x 16 inch height. Tabletop is 1 inch thick. Base diameter is 28 inches.
Condition is excellent, with age-appropriate scratches and stains (see photos with measuring tape for detail). I have cleaned minimally with non-toxic cleaner and a soft rag, so it's likely you could get it looking more like-new with a bit of effort if that's important to you.
As with many Eames table designs, the 1675 Table was related to another family of designs. An illustrated Herman Miller price list notes that the “base has same [sic] characteristics as 675 chair base, with polished aluminum finish and Black enamel steel tubes.” The chair in question is the lobby lounge better known as the Time Life chair, first produced in late 1960 as part of the Eameses’ design for the publishers’ New York City executive offices. This series of tables (all numerically named) was available at two different diameters, three different heights (the 1679, at 25½” high, was billed as a “low conference table”), and with a variety of material options for the tops. This table can be seen as an evolutionary step away from the more rigid geometry of the Eames aluminum group contract bases, but not quite as developed in form as the later Eames universal bases. The use of this table was limited to fixed positions, because unlike the universal bases, these bases could not take casters.
