Seller's Notes:Brown Jordan 60" Mid-Century Round Sunshade White Lace Retailer: Design Within Reach Designer: Robert Brown and Hubert Jordan Retail Price: $2780 It’s no mistake that the Mid-Century Sunshade evokes the minimalist aesthetic of Southern California modern in the 1950s: It was developed by Brown Jordan for the Case Study houses. The shade’s sculptural form is dictated by its versatile functionality. Its small footprint allows for flexible placement and the rotating shade accommodates a change in seating or the movement of the sun. Contract quality, it works well in multiples over individual lounge chairs or dining tables. Brown Jordan had helped define the shape of outdoor leisure furniture and accessories since it was started in Pasadena, California, in 1945 by Robert Brown and Huber Jordan. The Terrace Collection, originally designed in 1939, is the work of Hendrik Van Keppel and Taylor Green (VKG), a design team who “set the standard for stylish patios and poolside cabanas,” wrote the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Their designs represent the essence of Southern California living and were used in the majority of the Case Study houses, specifically Case Study 22, which was furnished entirely by VKG. Designer Walter Lamb's 1940s outdoor collection was the result of an experiment with bronze and copper tubing salvaged from sunken naval ships at Pearl Harbor. The Collection was recognized with a MoMA design award. Brown Jordan recreated the pieces from weatherproof brass that develop a patina over time (or can be polished). Since 1945, Pasadena, California-based Robert Brown and Huber Jordan Brown Jordan helped define the shape of outdoor leisure furniture and accessories.
